Facility Siting Study
Protecting Buildings, Occupants, and Business Continuity
A Facility Siting Study (FSS) evaluates the potential impact of major process incidents on occupied buildings and the people inside them. Conducted in accordance with API RP 752, API RP 753, and API RP 756, the study helps organizations understand whether buildings are appropriately located, adequately protected, and suitable for continued occupancy within operating facilities.
At Risk Matrix Consulting, we assess the effects of explosions, fires, and toxic releases on both building integrity and occupant safety, providing a sound basis for risk-informed decisions and effective mitigation strategies.
Our Assessment includes:
-
VCE (Vapour Cloud Explosion) Effects
Blast load assessment using both overpressure and impulse (positive phase duration).
Prediction of building damage and structural response.
Evaluation of occupant vulnerability from blast effects, glass breakage, and debris hazards.
-
Fire Effects
Assessment of thermal radiation from pool fires, jet fires, and fireballs.
Evaluation of building exposure and potential impact on occupants.
Determination of building tenability during fire scenarios.
-
Toxic Release Effects
Toxic dispersion modeling and exposure assessment.
Evaluation of toxic ingress through HVAC systems and building leakage paths.
Assessment of shelter-in-place effectiveness and occupant protection.
The assessments for occupant vulnerability and building damage levels were executed based on blast load (combination of predicted Peak Side-On overpressure, Pso, and Impuse, I) by utilizing Maximum Credible Events (MCE) concept. It is applied to both permanent and portable buildings.
Delivering More Than Hazard Contours
Our studies go beyond consequence modeling by answering the questions that matter most:
How will the building perform?
How will occupants be affected?
Is the risk acceptable?
What improvements are needed?
The result is a practical, risk-based understanding of building vulnerability, occupant risk, and mitigation options to support safer operations and regulatory compliance. It is a combination of consequence and risk-based assessment.
We assess how explosions, fires, and toxic releases affect buildings and the people inside them—helping organizations make informed decisions to protect personnel, maintain business continuity, and comply with API RP 752, API RP 753, and API RP 756.
We also offer Cost-Benefit Analysis to ensure that your plant building design or modification will be optimum cost while complying with API requirements and other relevant codes & standard.
